Kenya – Adventure for Rhinos
Physical Requirements
Physical Requirements
Adventure for Rhinos provides access to some of the most extraordinary wilderness experiences, from mountain biking through conservancies to trekking Mount Kenya. Many of these experiences occur in remote areas with varied physical demands and limited medical infrastructure.
Terrain Overview
1. Cycling in Laikipia, Kenya
-
Biking takes place at altitudes between ~1,166 to 2,122 m (3,825–6,962 ft), which means high-altitude cycling can feel more strenuous; your body may take time to acclimatize.
-
The terrain is non-technical, featuring dirt roads, single-track forest paths, and wide tracks through bushlands.
-
Support vehicles are available throughout the ride, giving you the option to rest or hop on when needed. The vehicles carry all day bags and spare bikes and tools.
2. Trekking on Mount Kenya
-
Treks are described as manageable day-by-day distances with a light load—you'll only carry minimal gear; porters will handle your heavier bags.
-
The maximum altitude reached is Point Lenana at 16, 355 ft (4,985 m).
-
A full support team handles luxury tent setup (including mattress and pillow), meals tailored to your diet, and gear transport (sleeping bag, clothing, etc.).

Level of Difficulty
Difficulty
Moderate. This adventure blends cycling and trekking through some of Kenya’s most stunning landscapes. Daily rides range from 15–35 miles on dirt and gravel roads, and the multi-day hike on Mt. Kenya takes you to 16,340 ft (4,985 m). While the altitude and long days add a challenge, the pace is steady, support is provided, and no technical biking or climbing skills are required.
Mobility & Fitness
Participants should be in good physical and mental health, with the ability to:
-
Cycle 4–6 hours per day on easy to moderate terrain, including some hills.
-
Trek for several days on Mt. Kenya, averaging 6–8 hours of hiking per day on established trails.
-
Adjust to high elevation with the support of experienced guides and gradual acclimatization.
-
Walk comfortably on uneven ground during cultural visits, wildlife viewing, and bush walks.
Medical Requirements
Travel in rural Kenya and trekking at altitude require overall good health. Some travelers may wish to consult their doctor about high-altitude travel. The team reserves the right to request additional medical information or to withdraw participants if physical or emotional limitations could pose a risk. Terrain & Activities
Expect dirt tracks, unpaved roads, and some rocky or sandy stretches while biking. On Mt. Kenya, trails are well-marked but can be steep or uneven in sections. Temperatures vary from warm lowlands to cooler mountain nights. Game drives and cultural visits involve frequent entry/exit from vehicles and short walks. Overall, this trip is designed for active travelers who enjoy being outdoors and can comfortably manage consecutive days of cycling and hiking.
